WEEK 46, MUMBAI, INDIA

Rochelle D SOUZA … happiness and joy always for your birthday on the 11th of November … we all are with you on this special occasion ..

Sameer Chauhan … happy birthday to you too today the 12th of November .. enjoy and live your days and years ahead with fulfilment and prosperity ..

If sound travels in the air in space in all mediums where it inhabits the atmosphere … can I please hear my voice of 10-20 years back .. no that would be in film .. no … say 60 years ago .. !!

And may I also hear whatever else was spoken then .. by others and others and others … Can someone record it and keep it for posterity, for the next and the next …

Books, papers, journals, documents, television, social media, shall all have the great original or supposed original … but I want to hear it too in the openness of the space it occupied when it emanated from the material that creates sound in the being …  please do this for me !

There is a certain level of learning and education among the people of the city where I return from - Kolkata. Their integrity on matters of culture and egalitarian concepts. On the classics, on the written word, on the finer qualities of existence … on poetry and music.

I have often noticed this in the homes of those that come from Maharashtra, from the Southern regions of our glorious land and of course in Bengal … a culture or tradition of learning understanding reading and educating oneself in the literatures and the arts and classical music and dance forms .. there are many such traditions in the various gharanas in the North too .. such sublime rituals of the guru and the shishya .. of submission to the crafts and then eventually the mastery over it ..

Never an arrogance of its learning, never a disrespect towards the teacher, always a sublimation into a culturally and more socially acceptable achievement … and still the desire to keep the efforts endlessly progressive, to move with the times and bring perhaps a fusion that we see happen so beautifully in art and music and dance forms …

This evolution … this dedication to wards its evolution, is what true genius are made of .. respect always to them that acquire it, and a regret that we were never able to be in the same bracket as them ..

We do the next best then … we listen we see we hear and we appreciate .. that too is an important craft, an acquiring of sorts, of possessing at least the ability to note to decipher to express in our chants for the good and the artistic ..

I did much of that on the flight back to Goa … contemplated over the passing skies and the winds, of the sounds that played in the ears and wondered when I would have the ability to do what they, that have excelled, have done.

Perhaps in another birth … perhaps …
